Abstract

756,023. Parachute release apparatus. REDWING, Ltd. Oct. 9, 1952 [Dec. 19, 1951] No. 29800/51. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVIII] A gas pressure operated servo device for parachute release includes a compartment 3 containing gas under pressure having an outlet 10 sealed by a frangible diaphragm 9 which is supported against rupture by the gas pressure by a displaceable support 12 positioned in abutment with one face of the diaphragm, pressure-responsive means 30 being provided to permit the support 12 to move away from the diaphragm to allow the gas under pressure to burst the diaphragm and flow through the outlet to actuate a member 24 connected to the rip cord. In Fig. 2, a gas receptacle 4 is contained in the compartment 3, so that when the latter is screwed on to boss 2 sufficiently to form a gastight joint, a hollow needle 32 pierces the receptacle to release the gas which is then blocked by diaphragm 9. The piston 12 is normally held against the diaphragm by a lever 16 which, as seen in Fig. 4, is restrained by two sears 29 and 33 of which the latter is removable by a static line, and the former is controlled by the capsule 30. As soon as the load is clear of the aircraft and is below a predetermined height, the piston 12 is free to slide and the gas under pressure bursts diaphragm 9, the gas flowing past piston 12 which is smaller than its cylinder, through conduit 17 into cylinder 18, and pushing back piston head 20. Piston 19 then forces fluid from sleeve 25 through a conduit 26 (Fig. 3) past a needle valve 28 into a cylinder 23 to commence the stroke of the member 24, connected to the rip cord, at a slow rate, determined by the setting of valve 28. When piston head 20 (Fig. 2) has moved back enough to uncover a recess 21 (Figs. 2 and 3), the gas flows through conduit 22 direct to cylinder 23, and the stroke of the member 24 is completed at a fast rate. A pressure gauge may be provided for compartment 3. Specifications 606,708 and 748,755 are referred to.
