Abstract

1289509 Powder fire extinguishers CARL ESSER KG DRUCKGASARMATUREN 15 Oct 1969 50745/69 Heading A5A A fire extinguisher of the powder/pressurising gas type in which the gas is stored in an internal container sealed by a membrane comprises a valved outlet controlled by two separately actuatable levers, the first 35 in its normal position locking the second 30, but on actuation successively displacing shut-off member 20 until spike 26 pierces membrane 18 and simultaneously releasing lever 30, member 20 in its displaced position obstructing the extinguishant outlet 22 and lever 30 being operable to control 20 in respect of 22. The extinguisher comprises main body 10 filled with powder 13, and pressure gas bottle 16 secured to the lower end of valve housing 11. Shut-off member 20 is slidably mounted in axial bore 19 of 11 and carries a cylindrical lower tip 25 terminating in spike 26. O-ring seals 21, 24 are provided at two points around 20. Normally member 20 is urged by spring 28 bearing on washer 29 upwards against the underside of lever 30, which is pivotable about pin 31. A second spring 33 located in a bore in the upper end of 20 also bears against lever 30. In addition further lever 35 is mounted by means of pivot pin 36 on housing 11, with its nose 37' engaging in notch 38 of member 20. When required for use, lever 35 is pivoted upwards into the Fig. 2 position, in which nose 37 forces down shut-off member 20 until spike 26 perforates membrane 18, releasing pressure gas into chamber 39. On completion of the pivoting arc of 35, nose 37 slips down from notch 38 and releases member 20 which immediately ascends under the action of spring 28 until it again bears against lever 30 (Fig. 3). In this position O-ring 24 seals inlet 23 from the passage of the powder/gas mixture. To eject the mixture from nozzle 22 lever 30 is depressed (Fig. 4). Shut-off member 20 again descends and O-ring 24 is displaced from inlet 23, permitting extinguishant flow to outlet 22. Thus continuous or intermittent ejection may be obtained as required. After use lever 35 cannot inadvertently be restored to the Fig. 1 position, since face 40 of nose 37 bears against the outer side of 20 until member 20 is deliberately depressed, e.g. by a pronged member, to release the nose. This may be effected on recharging the extinguisher.
