July 12, 1954, No. 20386/54 Classes 7(2) and 7(4) In an ignition arrangement for I.C. engines having intake and exhaust valves 27, 27a, Fig. 8, respectively, and two sparking plugs 18, 19 diametrically disposed in the cylinder(s), a lateral passage 21 opening through the cylinder wall at a point on a radius which is at an angle of 90 degrees to the line drawn through the sparking plug centres and at a level in alignment with the plane in which the head of the intake valve 27 lies when the valve is open, a third sparking plug 20 is provided with its sparking electrodes disposed inside the passage 21.. A threaded adaptor 24, Fig. 6, may be used when a passage is not provided, the part 21<SP>1</SP> being screwed into the cylinder wall and the sparking plug inserted into the opening 26. The engine may operate with the third plug only or the latter may be energized at a different time from the other plugs. The plugs are energized from separate magnetos which are located on one end of the engine. The invention is shown applied to a four-cylinder horizontally-opposed engine.
