Abstract

<PICT:0755220/III/1> In tubular apparatus for evaporating or distilling acids, a tube plate assembly comprises a pair of plates 10, 11 spaced apart by means of hollow sockets 12 which carry gland means for engaging the ends of the tubes 18, the sockets being reduced in diameter at their ends to form abutment shoulders 13, and the socket extremities being cemented or welded as at 14 to the plates 10, 11. Preferably the plates 10, 11 are made of acid-resistant material such as synthetic resin or graphite. The sockets 12 and tubes 18 may also be made of the same corrosion-resistant material as that of the plates 10, 11. Alternatively, the plates may comprise a layer of acid-resistant material and a layer of material of greater mechanical strength such as steel. In the form shown the sockets 12 are adapted to receive packing rings 16 and glands 15. Alternatively ferrules carrying packing rings and glands may be screwed into the sockets 12. Spacer blocks 17 may also be provided between the plates 10, 11.
