[Also in Division F4] A packing unit for use in heat and/or material exchange apparatus involving contact between liquids and gases comprises two parallel end plates 3 secured to a support member 4 in the form of a rod or tube, the plates 3 having orifices 2 for the reception of fillers 1, e.g. glass helices. The plates, 3, member 4 and fillers 1 may be constructed of glass, metallic, synthetic plastics and/or ceramic materials. The orifices may be provided with fixing elements to secure the fillers in position and such that they may be readily detached. The fillers are protected in transport and/or in situ by rods disposed in peripheral orifices 5. A plurality of similar units may be stacked together in the exchange apparatus, the units being aligned by rods passing through coaxial, hollow support members 4. The end plates may be of any rectilinear shape, e.g. hexagonal, (as shown) triangular or rectangular.
