Liquids, gases and vapours are brought into contact with each other in a column wherein hollow bodies are loosely strung on supporting rods or tubes extending across the column, the various fluids passing between the hollow bodies which are lifted or rotated by their passage. As -shown the hollow bodies are tubes 2, 3 and 4 and each rod or tube 1 may support a single long tube or a number of shorter tubes which may be. spaced apart. The hollow bodies may be made of wire mesh or be in the form of helical springs. Stationary baffles may also be provided and when in the form of tubes may be used as heat exchange surfaces over which the fluids being contacted pass. The tubes which may be used to support the hollow bodies may also be used for heatexchange purposes.
