Abstract
754,926. Hand stamps. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 22, 1954 [Dec. 29, 1953; Jan. 18, 1954]. No. 37028/54. Class 100 (2). A time stamp comprises a base portion 11 and a stamp portion 10 removably carried thereby, a clock or the like 16 in the base and magnetic coupling means between a spindle 15 rotated by the clock and a spindle 23 carrying a stamp 39 at the lower end and a time-indicating member 25 at the upper end. The base is formed with an upwardly extending wall 13a with sloping inside surfaces for co-operation with mating surfaces on the side walls of the stamp portion 10. By this means the stamp portion, when replaced, is always guided accurately back into the position where the spindles 15 and 23 are aligned. Mounted on the end of spindle 15 is a magnet 18 adapted to co-operate with a similar magnet 33 on the lower end of spindle 23. Spindle 23 is axially slidable and spring loaded towards an upper position in which a disc 31 carried thereby engages a stationary flange member 24a. This prevents rotation of the spindle when the stamp portion is separated from the base portion. When the magnets 18, 33 are brought together in the position shown the spindle 23 is drawn down against the spring 28 and freed for rotation. A small air gap is preserved between the magnets by contact between a stop plate 19 and an end 23c of spindle 23. The attraction between the magnets causes the spindle 23 to rotate with the spindle 15 according to the movements of the clock. In the arrangement described the lower plate 36 of the stamp portion is provided with a rubber type face bearing twelve numerals 37 forming a clock dial surrounding the spindle 23. The stamp 39 is in the form of a pointer and is attached to a disc 32 on the spindle 23 so as to rotate therewith. The spindle 15 is geared to the clock mechanism so as to rotate once every twelve hours. Also provided in the stamp portion is a series of manually operable rollers 48 controlling type carrying bands 50 adapted to print the date and a.m. or p.m. as shown in Fig. 4. Other types 56 are secured to the plate 36 for printing an address or the like. All the types except the time-indicating stamp 39 are inked from a pad 20. The stamp 39 is connected to a permanently inked pad 38. A plate 25 rotating with spindle 23 has a pointer 42 indicating the time by co-operation with twelve hour markings 40 on the upper face of the stamp. The plate 25 is covered by a window 43.
