Abstract

754,138. Spindle brakes. BODDEN & SON, Ltd., W. Feb. 2, 1955 [Feb. 3, 1954], No. 3163/54. Class 120 (2). A brake assembly for a textile spindle comprises a brake drum arranged around the spindle and rotatable therewith, a contracting brake ring encircling said drum and having converging faces on either side of a radial aperture in said ring, and a forked brake operating member mounted for sliding movement parallel to the axis of said ring and adapted to engage the converging faces on the ring to contract the same so as to grip the brake drum and bring it to rest. As shown, the assembly comprises a brake drum 10 formed integrally with a wharf 11 of the spindle and a brake ring or strap 12 having friction linings 13 encircling the drum 10. The ring 12 is split radially at 14 and the ends turned outwardly to form ears or lugs 15 having inside faces which form a wedge. This wedge co-operates with a vertically movable forked brake operating member 16 fixed to the upper end of a rod 17 to contract the brake ring 12 whenever the rod 17 is moved downwardly by means of a pedal.
