Abstract

1,071,100. Internal shoe drum brakes. L. DUSSARRAT. Dec. 30, 1964 [Jan. 10, 1964], No. 52752/64. Heading F2E. In an internal shoe drum brake, a resilient retaining ring 7 or sleeve (11), Fig. 8 (not shown), is located around a circumferentially floating shaft 1, operating a cam 2 disposed between brake shoe ends (not shown), and is compressed between the walls of an elongated opening 3, Fig. 4 (not shown), in a support member 4, the arrangement being such that, on brake release, the shaft, though free to rotate, is prevented from circumferential movement in the direction of arrows 5, but, on brake application, the brake forces generated exceed the friction between the ring or sleeve and the walls of the opening and permit self-centering of the shoes according to lining wear. In the embodiment shown, the ring 7 is split and loosely retained in a peripheral groove 6 on the shaft. In a modified embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the ring is located in support member recess around the opening. In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), a split sleeve (11) is just loosely mounted around the shaft. Said sleeve may be formed by several turns of a helical spring.
