[Also in Group X] A weather protection device for use with a hatch cover having several metal sections 3 adapted to be moved independently to provide an opening for working cargo comprises a portable beam 5 for attachment to each of the opposed edges of adjacent sections 3 which have been moved apart to form a hatchway opening 4, a plurality of secondary cover-plates 6 spanning the gap 4, and upper covers 8 or 25 which are movably superimposed over the secondary cover-plates to cover temporarily any space 7 formed between the latter. The beam 5 carries a sealing material 11 and a member 12 for contacting the cover section 3, and an eye 13 through which a stay 14 is attached to space opposite beams. The secondary cover plates 6 interlock by means of reversely turned flanges 16 and are formed with a draining gutter 17. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 3 the upper covers 8 span the portable beams and are adapted to ride over the cover-plates 6 by means of wheels 19 mounted on flanges 18 of the covers 8 and rolling along the flanges 9 of the beams. In the embodiment of Fig. 8 the upper covers 25 are pivoted at 27 to a portable block 26 resting on the cover-section 3, the covers 25 opening V-wise. A collapsible cover 22 (see Group X) mounted on the cargo runner 20 has its downwardly opening mouth large enough to cover the hatchway opening.
