752,666. Flame-hardening. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Feb. 10, 1954 [Feb. 12, 1953], No. 3875/54. Class 72. In a method for the flame-hardening of steel rails in which the upper side and, if desired, the flanks of the rail head are heated by one or more burners and cooled immediately afterwards with a coolant, which may be liquid or gaseous, e.g. air, the bottom of the rail head is heated by one or more burners immediately before and/or immediately after the heating of the upper side of the rail. As shown, an apparatus 2 used for treating the rail head 1 comprises a chamber 3, to which is delivered a combustible gas mixture, e.g. propane and oxygen, and which has a number of primary burners 5 and secondary burners 5<SP>1</SP> by means of which flames are directed on to the upper side and flanks and on to the bottom of the rail head, respectively. A liquid chamber 6, possessing openings 8 for jets of coolant, e.g. water, is secured adjacent to the chamber 3 and extends over the upper side and the flanks of the rail head thus quenching only these portions of the rail head. The apparatus during use (a) may be moved over the rail in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2, or (b) the rail may be moved through the stationary apparatus.
