Abstract
1298545 Calcium carbide R ENYA 5 July 1971 [10 Aug 1970] 31363/71 Heading C1A CaC 2 is prepared by heating a mixture of a carbonaceous and calcium material (e.g. CaCO 2 , CaO or Ca(OH) 2 ) with a hydrocarbon fuel gas- O 2 -mixture in an agitated vessel. The limestone 36 and the coke 37 in the vessel (1) are directly heated by the flame 38 of the gas mixture delivered by the injector 3 until the mixture 37 becomes white-hot. The inner surface wall of the vessel 1 is cooled by a curtain of compressed air (31) supplied by the annular tube 4. The horizontal eccentric movement of the vessel (1) causes mixing of the hot coke and, combined with continued gas heating, melts the limestone. The CO gas generated during the process is burnt by the additional oxygen curtain 39 provided by the injector 3. The fuel gas may be acetylene, propane or a heavy oil. In a modification a plurality of injectors are used and the vessel is supported on pneumatic, rubber bearings.
