Abstract
752,100. Discharge apparatus. HERAEUS GES., W. C. Jan. 11, 1954 [Jan. 10, 1953], No. 746/54. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XVI] A beam of electrons or ions is used for producing permanent records or writing characters on a carrier which is moved across the path of the beam or over which the beam is scanned. The apparatus consists of a high vacuum beam generating chamber 1, a recording or writing chamber 7 preferably at atmospheric pressure, and a series of intermediate chambers 5, 6 at successively increasing pressures. The appropriate pressure conditions are maintained by pumps 10, 11, 12. The apertures in the chamber partitions 13, 14, 15 are 0.5 to a few mms. in diameter. The material 18 on which the record or writing is formed is moved over rollers 8, 9. The beam may be deflected in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the support 18 by plates 22 or coils 23 within the chamber 7. The beam may be scanned in two mutually perpendicular directions. The carrier 18 may consist of paper, synthetic resin, ceramic or metal. The carrier may be multi-layered, multi-colour contrasts showing up according to the layer exposed, or it may consist of a single dielectric layer of a thickness of 0.1 to 1 Á which gives varying interference colour effects according to variations in thickness. The recording may be effected on paper treated with dyes. The apparatus may be used to prepare metal or stone plates to be used as printing blocks.
