751,879. Variable-speed gearing. AMERICAN BRAKE SHOE CO. Feb. 25, 1954, No. 5572/54 Class 80(2) [Also in Group XXXI] In an engine drive unit arranged within a cycle front wheel FW rotatable on an axle 22 fixed to a centre strut 23 which is mounted in the steering column and to which is also fixed an engine and gear casing 24, the crank-shaft 25 drives a counter-shaft 35 journalled in a sleeve 50 secured to the casing, through a sprocket 28, a chain 29, a sprocket 30 secured to a spindle 45 co-operating with a kick-starter mechanism 120, and a main centrifugal friction clutch 32 which engages at a speed somewhat above idling speed, and the shaft 35 drives an output member 37, journalled on shaft 35 and connected to the wheel hub through chain gearing 38, 39, 40, through epicyclic gearing comprising a sun 61 fixed to shaft 35, planets 62 in a carrier 64 secured by a squared mounting on member 37, and an annulus 70 secured by a squared mounting on member 37, and an annulus 70 secured by transverse ribs and recesses in a two-part sheet-metal drum 71L, 71R journalled at 75L, 75R on member 37 and sleeve 50. Reverse rotation of annulus 70 is prevented, so as to provide a minimum low gear, by pawls 82 pivoted on drum 71R and coacting with teeth in a ring 85 secured to sleeve 50, the pawls being loaded by leaf springs secured in a ring 89 secured to drum 71R. A centrifugal disc clutch 60 between drum 71L and member 37 progressively varies the gear from low gear to direct drive with increase of speed of member 37, the clutch comprising a friction-faced disc 90, splined on drum 71L by transverse ribs and recesses, between a disc 97 and secured by bolts 110 in a sheet-metal housing 92 secured to member 37 and a disc 98 through which the bolts 110 pass and which is acted on by centrifugal balls 105 cooperating with the inclined wall 92C of the housing 92, the balls being urged inwardly by springs 103 between the plates 97, 98 and by springs 109 acting between disc 97 and and a disc 108 which engages the balls.
