Abstract

751,323. Golf-clubs. JONES. R. Aug. 17, 1954. No. 23935/54.. Class 132(2) In an "iron" golf-club the head 1 of which is rotatable relative to the shaft 9 so thta the loft can be varied, the axis of rotation of the head makes an obtuse angle C with the axis of the shaft and the striking face 6 makes an acute angle A with the said axis of rotation. The head has a hosel 3 formed with a threaded bore 4 into which is screwed one end 11 of an elbow 10. Elbow 10 is surrounded by a ferrule 13 which is held against rotation by a transverse pin 17 but can slide slightly longitudinally on the upper part 12 of the elbow. The lower end of the ferrule is formed as a flange 15 of frusto cylindrical shape which mates with the upper surface of the hosel 3, these parts having interengaging teeth 8. 16 shaped to resist the striking blow of the club. Ferrule 13 is extended upwards at 14 to engage the shaft 9. Flange 15 is forced into engagement with the hosel by screwing down a sleeve 21 the threads of which engage threads on the ends of pin 17 and on the outer surface of a collar 24. Alternatively, the flange 15 may be forced down by a compression spring. To adjust the loft, the sleeve 21 is unscrewed and the head is pulled slightly away from the shaft. The head is then rotated the desired amount on the part 11 of elbow 10, the thread of which is fine, and the sleeve 21 is again screwed down. Full details of the angular relationship of the parts are described and the arrangement is such that, as the loft of the head is increased, the lie of the head is also increased.
