Golf clubs; croquet mallets; shafts. - A golf club, croquet mallet, &c. has a solid head of which the main constituent, is rubber, vulcanite, ebonite, bakelite, or like material, such material being moulded around a metal or other reinforcement. A club head of the " wood " type, Fig. 1, comprises a metal nucleus formed of a plate 2 welded to a socket tube 3. A core 6 of Portland cement, with or without a filler such as sawdust, is plastered around the plate and the whole roughly covered with vulcanite 1. The head is then moulded to the desired shape and vulcanized. The shaft 4 is secured within the tube 1 by an axial wedge 7 concealed by a vulcanite plug 8 cemented in position. An " iron " club, Fig. 3, is formed in a similar manner with the exceptions that the metal nucleus comprises a socket tube 10 flattened and offset at its lower end 11 to replace the plate 2, and the shaft is secured in position by a rivet 12. The core 6 may be formed of metal such as lead or aluminium and may be disposed within instead of around the nucleus. The shaft may comprise a metal tube coated with vulcanite, the tube being either integral with, or separate from the tube 3, 10. The vulcanite may be softer adjacent the handle than at other parts of the head.
