751,322. Waveguides. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 17, 1954, No. 23888/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (8). In order to prevent degeneracy between the H 01 and E 11 modes in a circular-section waveguide intended for transmission of the H 01 mode the reactive component of the surface impedance is increased without materially increasing the resistive component. According to the Specification it can be shown (see Proc. I.E.E.. Vol. 101, part III, No. 72, July 1954, p. 238) that a surface loading consisting of a thin skin of any low-loss dielectric possesses the property Xd>>Rd where the surface impedance Zd=Rd+Xd. In the example given the loading for a copper guide of 7 cm. diameter operating at 34,500 Mc/s. consists of a layer of polythene of thickness equal to 25 microns. If the guide is made of aluminium the loading may consist of a layer of alumina formed by an anodizing process. Advantage may be taken of the resultant decrease in attenuation by decreasing the maximum permissible radius of curvature of the bends in the run of the guide.
