Abstract

1,034,274. Waveguides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Feb. 28, 1963 [March 8, 1962], No. 8011/63. Heading H1W. A waveguide elbow comprises an ellipsoidal reflecting surface 15 with foci located at the outer ends of sections 11, 12 designed to transform the wave-front from planar to spherical. The elbow is designed for the transmission of TE 01 circular-electric mode energy between circular waveguides 16, 17 of given radius. In order to prevent generation of TE 02 mode energy, the radius of the guides at the elbow is made greater than the radius of guides 16, 17. The transition sections, shown as hyperbolically tapered, give rise to a spherical wave-front. The geometry of the ellipsoid surface is such that such a wave is reflected from one focus to the other. The lengths of the transitions may be unequal. The eccentricity of the ellipse varies with the angle # of the elbow.
