1,062,699. Waveguides. HACKETHALDRAHT-UND KABEL-WERKE A.G. and TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. Nov. 12, 1964 [Nov. 12, 1963], No. 46132/64. Headings H1W. In helically corrugated waveguide, the pitch angle changes sign at least once along the length of the guide, the angle varying either continuously or in steps to pass through a plane in which it is zero, whereby to compensate for the rotation of the plane of polarization of a wave propagated along the corrugated guide. For transmission of a band having a mean wavelength #, the length over which the angle changes from an extreme value of one sign to an extreme value of the other is arranged to be an odd multiple of #/4, to reduce reflections. The guide, which may be of circular or elliptical cross-section, may include extended portions having the extreme value of pitch angle. Bends exhibiting little electrical distortion can be produced by bending the guide symmetrically about a plane of zero pitch angle, and arranging that the planes of successive turns of the corrugation, before bending, intersect in an axis which constitutes a mirror image, with respect to the guide, of the axis about which the guide is to be bent (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). Reference is made to a prior art method of reducing the rotation of the plane of polarization in a corrugated guide by the successive decrease and increase in depth of the corrugation.
