Abstract

750,974. Silencers for gases. MAXIM SILENCER CO. May 24,1954 [June 2,1953], No. 15192/54. Class 7(2) A gas-conducting, perforated tube 23, extends through the end walls, 21, 22 of a shell 20, sound-absorbing material 27, such as screened coke being disposed between the tube and the shell, and an imper; forate baffle 29 is arranged generally longitudinally of the shell and in the material 27 whereby an imperforate wall is provided at varying radial distances from the tube. Capped openings 30 may be provided to facilitate filling the shell with the material 27. As shown in Fig. 2, an arcuate baffle 29 extends from the wall 21, concentrically with the tube 23 and to the middle of the shell 20. In modifications, (a), Fig. 3 (not shown) a baffle encompassing an arc of 180 to 240 degrees extends between the walls 21, 22 and is spaced midway betwen the tube and the shell, (b) the inner ends of arcuate baffles 33, 34, Fig. 5, extending from the walls 21, 22 and longitudinally of the shell are in overlapping relation, and the baffles are respectively spaced from the tube one quarter and one half of the radial distance between the tube and the shell, (c), the tube 23, Fig. 8, is located eccentrically with respect to the axis of the shell 20 and an arcuate baffle 37 extending between the walls 21, 22 is disposed in eccentric relationship with the tube and the shell, the respective edges of the baffle being located midway between the tube and shell (d), a frusto-conical sleeve 49, Fig. 9, secured to a wall 43 converges towards the axis of and extends to the midpoint of a perforated tube 44, the inner end of the sleeve being radial spaced from the tube, (f), a number of unequally spaced transverse partitions 55, Fig. 10, extend between a perforated tube 53 and a shell 50 to define silencing sections 100---103, each section including inner and outer arcuate baffles 56, 57, and (g) a number of sections are defined by irregularly spaced, transverse partitions 66, Fig. 11, equally radially spaced by openings 70 therein from a perforated tube 63, and arcuate baffles 67, 68 radially spaced from the tube by different amounts are arranged in staggered relationship in adjacent sections.
