Abstract

748,943. Exhaust silencers. MCFARLANE HARRISON, Ltd. June 25 1954 [March 25, 1953]. No. 8181/53. Class 7(2) In a silencer having its interior subdivided by one or more transverse baffles E<SP>1</SP>, E<SP>2</SP> and E<SP>3</SP>, the or each baffle, as well as the barrel A and ends C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> of the silencer, comprise two thicknesses of sheet metal with an interposed layer L of material which has a permanent sounddeadening effect. The sound-deadening material may comprise fine sand, flue dust, i.e. a by-product of a shot blasting process, wire wool, horsehair or honeycomb cardboard. As shown, baffles comprising two identical metal discs 10 marginally radiused at 11 and secured together by rings 12 divide the interior of a barrel A into expansion chambers of mutually differing volumes, those chambers communicating with each other by way of openings in the baffles or open-ended perforated tubes I, or both. The tubes I, which may have longitudinal ribs, are spaced angularly around a main opening F<SP>1</SP> in the baffle E<SP>1</SP>. A perforated outlet tube J fixed in an opening F" in the baffle E<SP>3</SP> and which may be provided with longitudinal ribs extends into an outlet tube K associated with the wall C<SP>2</SP>. The baffles have angularly spaced, pressed-in recesses 16, preferably on the same pitch circle as the openings H<SP>1</SP>, H<SP>2</SP> and H<SP>3</SP> for the tubes I, producing at the inner sides of the discs 10 complementary bosses 17 facing one another in closelyspaced relation, and similar formations may be provided on the inner faces of the annuli 14, 15 forming the walls C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP>. Alternatively, in addition to, or in place of the recesses 16 the baffles have pressed radial or circumferential ribs, or both. The barrel A may have longitudinal ribs and be in sections, and is enclosed in a ribbed or corrugated, sheet metal, outer casing M. The junctions of the portions 11 of the baffles and the rings 12 form pockets for the sound-deadening material, so that when the silencer is disposed vertically and tendency of the material to settle clear of the upper sets of bosses 17 is virtually eliminated by the compensating volume of the material which gravitates from the pockets. Similar arrangements may be made in the walls C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> by providing curved portions 18 in the annuli 14, 15.
