750,620. Fluid-actuated valves. INDUSTRIAL CONTROL VALVES, Ltd. June 21, 1954 [June 24, 1953], No. 17478/53. Class 135. In a pressure regulating valve comprising a body 1 having inlet and outlet passages 2, 3 and a closure member 5 connected to a diaphragm 7 (or a piston), subjected on one face through a passage 8 to outlet pressure and on its other face to the loading of a spring 10 abutting a plate 11, the spring loading may be automatically varied on movement of the plate 11 by electromagnetic or fluid-operable means. As shown, the plate 11 has a pin 13 which bears against the movable core 14 of a solenoid 15 mounted within a spring-loaded cylinder 16 slidable in the body 1. Adjustable stops 17, 18 co-operate with the core and cylinder respectively to limit the minimum and maximum spring loadings. When the solenoid is excited, the plate 11 is moved into the position shown, the spring 10 then exerting its maximum pressure. When no current passes through the solenoid, the plate 11, pin 13 and core 14 are moved upwards by springs 12 until arrested by the stop 17 and the spring 10 then exerts its minimum pressure. The fluid controlled by the valve may be, e.g., liquid or gaseous fuel or air supplied to the combustion chamber of a furnace, and the excitation of the solenoid may be controlled by a switch operable by, e.g., a thermostatic device responsive to combustion chamber temperature or to the pressure of the fluid in the inlet passage 2. The solenoid may be replaced by a fluidpressure servomotor responsive to either of the variable conditions mentioned, or by an electric motor which moves the plate 11 through a cam, screw, &c.
