Abstract

Class 145 [Also in Group VIII] A fire-retarding board comprises heatinsulating incombustible material inlaid in wood in not less than two layers or zones such that in each layer or zone bodies of wood are enclosed by the said material and. the bodies of wood in one layer are displaced in relation to those in another layer. As shown in Fig. 3, the board may consist of an intermediate layer 12 of wood and two outer wooden layers 10 and 14. The inner surface of layer 10 adjacent the layer 12 is provided with square projections 16 which are mutually interspaced in a regular pattern. Similar projections 18 are formed on layer 14 in such manner that the projections 16 are evenly distributed between the projections 18 when the layers are placed with the inner surfaces together. The layers 10 and 14 may be grooved sheets of wood or flat plane-parallel sheets with wooden blocks glued thereon to constitute the projections. Heat-insulating layers (e.g. asbestos sheets or mica), 20 of thickness equal to the height of the projections 16, 18 and in which apertures are punched to correspond to the projections 16 and 18 are glued to the inner faces of layers 10 and 14 and the assembly of layers 10, 20, layer 12' and layers 20, 14 glued together If desired a pulp of asbestos fibres in water-glass can be spread over the layers 10 and 14 to the exact height of the projections. Desirably the direction of the grain in layer 12 is at an angle, say 90 degrees, to that in layers 10 and 14. Thin facing sheets 22 may also be glued to the outer surfaces. The board may be constructed as in Fig. 5 with outer layers 24 and 26 assembled from planks formed with wide shallow grooves 28 and 30 into which strips of asbestos sheeting 32 and 34 are inserted. An intermediate wooden layer 40 and facing layers 42 and 44 complete the assembly. The modification shown in Fig. 7 comprises a number of abutting wooden slats 48 glued together side edge to side edge. These side edges are formed with grooves of different depths 50 and 52, Fig. 8, so that on assembly shallow grooves 50, 56 register with deep grooves 54 and 52 in the next slat. The heatinsulating non-combustible material 62 is inserted in the passage so formed.
