Abstract

403,249. Nonconducting coveriugs for sound. McILROY, W., 168, East Brown Street, Birmingham, Michigan, U.S.A. March 2, 1933, No. 6327. [Class 64 (ii).] Tiles or slabs of fibre or pulp board or other material, for forming or covering the walls, ceilings, &c. of auditoriums, studios, &c., and constructed to minimize the reflection of sound, comprise a panel member (with or without a spaced backing) having grooves on its opposite faces, which grooves cut into one another where they cross to form apertures. As shown, each tile or slab is formed of inner and outer layers 1, 2 spaced apart by strips 5-8 arranged near the edges of the members 1, 2 and glued &c, thereto so as to form an intermediate air space 10. Some of the strips, such as 7, 8, may project beyond the edges to form tongues, and the other strips 5, 6 may be inset to form grooves, in order to provide a tongued-andgrooved connection between adjacent tiles. The outer face of the member 1 is formed with parallel grooves 15 and the inner face with parallel grooves 16, arranged to cross the grooves 15, and of such a depth as to cut into them at the points of intersection, thus forming apertures 20 communicating with the space 10. In order to increase the number of apertures, the outer surface may be provided with two sets of grooves crossing one another, and the inner surface with two similar sets of crossing grooves, the inner and outer grooves cutting into one another to form the apertures. The tiles may be secured to a backing by nails 11.
