Abstract

767,584. Wood substitutes. FAHRNI, F. Aug. 7, 1952 [April 30, 1952], No. 19976/52. Class 70. [Also in Group VIII] A layer 1 of non-combustible material in fragmentary form and thermosetting material is interposed between two adjacent unfabricated layers 2 of wood in fragmentary form and thermosetting material and the assembly is bonded together under heat and pressure, thereby interlocking the irregular surfaces of the wood layers with the contiguous surfaces of the non-combustible layer and consolidating the board without substantial formation of hollow spaces between the layers. The wood may be in the form of wood shavings, wood wool, sawdust, fibres or chippings. The non-combustible material may be asbestos, mineral wool, slag wool or other artificial or naturally occurring inorganic substance. The thermosetting material may be a phenol-, urea- or melamineformaldehyde condensate or casein. The outer layers 2 may be covered by layers 3 of large area wood shavings 3a to give a more attractive appearance, or by layers of veneer. If desired, more than one non-combustible layer may be employed, the fragmentary wood layers and non-combustible layers alternating. In a further embodiment a non-combustible layer may form one of the outer layers of the composite board. In another embodiment the layers may be cold compacted and then superposed prior to subjecting to heat and pressure. The non- combustible material may be strewn on a sheet of paper and then placed on the fragmentary wood layer. A specific example describes the manufacture of the board according to the invention.
