749,357. Making compound piston rings. METALES Y PLATERIA RIBERA SOC. ANON., and BANQUAREL, A. L. June 25, 1954 [July 10, 1953], No. 18751/54. Class 83 (2). A process for manufacturing piston rings of two metals, steel for providing the spring action and anti-friction metal, e.g. bronze, copper or lead-copper, for the sliding surface comprises rolling a steel sheet into the form of a cylinder, machining the outer surface of the cylinder and applying to said surface a coat of anti-friction metal, heat treating the coated cylinder in a furnace of controlled temperature and atmosphere, cutting the cylinder into rings, machining or grinding the rings and finally hardening and verifying their circumference. If desired the inner surface of the ring may also be coated with anti-friction metal and the coatings may be applied by spraying or by a powder metallurgy method. Dovetailed grooves may be provided in the steel cylinder to ensure a firm connection between the two metals. The heat treatment effects a homogenization of the metals.
