Abstract

1,191,858. Altering physical properties. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. 12 Sept., 1967 [24 Sept., 1966], No. 41512/67. Heading B3V. A method of incresing the fatigue strength of a hardened or hardened and finish-machined workpiece having a curved surface subjected to pressing and sliding stresses, e.g. a gear-wheel or the raceway of a bearing, comprises shot peening the curved surface to increase its strength and produce a residual compressive stress after hardening or hardening and finish-machining. For brittle materials, e.g. high-carbon bearing steels, hardness may be reduced by tempering before shot peening.
