749,358. Making compound piston rings. METALES Y PLATERIA RIBERA SOC. ANON., and BANQUAREL, A. L. June 25, 1954 [July 10, 1953], No. 18752/54. Class 83 (2). A process for manufacturing piston rings of two metals, steel for providing the spring action and anti-friction metal, e.g. bronze, copper or lead copper, for the sliding surface comprises winding lengths of steel wires, rods or bars of a square, rectangular or other cross-section to form either individual rings or a cylindrical coil, machining the outer surface of the rings or coil, then, in the case of the coil, making a cut to separate the helices and fashioning them to form rings, applying to the rings, either individually or stacked into a cylindrical pile, a coat of anti-friction metal, heat treating the composite rings so formed in a furnace of controlled temperature and atmosphere, machining or grinding and finally hardening the rings. The antifriction metal may be applied by spraying or by a powder-metallurgy method. The heat treatment effects a homogenization of the metals. Dovetailed grooves may be provided in the steel rings for ensuring a firm connection between the metals.
