Abstract

740,182. Magnetrons. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 8, 1954 [Jan. 9, 1953], No. 612/54. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XXII] A method of producing magnetron anodes and like metal bodies having a generally cylindrical exterior and an internal cavity of relatively complicated profile consists in forming the body of separate elements 3 each in the form of a bar fabricated to a profile corresponding to a respective portion of the complicated profile desired, and after assembling said elements in juxtaposition in a tubular sleeve 4 causing said sleeve to contract for consolidating the separate bar elements into a composite whole. The bar elements 3 may be of T-, L- or U-shaped cross-section, Figs. 1b, 5, or of other section, Figs. 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, and be provided with interfitting tongues and recesses 21 or 22. The elements may be assembled in a loose sleeve and the sleeve contracted by passage through a die, or the elements may be assembled in a relatively tight-fitting sleeve and the sleeve shrunk on. The elements and sleeves may be formed in continuous lengths and the resultant assembly sub-divided. The elements, of for example copper, may be assembled on a mandrel 19, 20 prior to their enclosure by the sleeve and after contraction of the sleeve and machining of the body, if necessary, the mandrel, of for example aluminium alloy, is dissolved out by soda. After the sleeve has been contracted the assembly may be placed over a mandrel, cut transversely into suitable sections and formed with annular grooves on its end faces.
