Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce crop losses and to improve the accuracy of coil width by forming recesses on surfaces of either one of the leading end part and tail end part of a slab or a set of both surfaces which are faced to each other. CONSTITUTION:A slab 2 of example, width W1 is subjected to one reciprocation of screw down in its thickness direction and is thereby formed to a hand-drum shaped plane shape, after which recesses 14 are formed by rolling rolls on the broadside surfaces of both a leading end 4 and a tail end 6 which are faced to each other. If the recesses 14 are formed to width W3, lenght DELTAL, that is, depth DELTAW, metallic flow directed to the formation of fishtails during forming of the recesses 14 is completely absorbed in the recesses 14. The metallic flow accompanied with the thickness screw down and broadside screw down after this is absorbed as well, whereby the production of fishtails or tongues is completely prevented, and crop losses are minimized. Further, the rates of loss of width in both end parts 4, 6 with respect to the width in the central part are decreased and the accuracy of the width of coils is improved.
