Abstract

A cigarette filter comprises a piece of tow of substantially parallel regenerated cellulose filaments having a rough irregular surface and cavities due to the use in filament formation of a viscose in which air or other gas is finely divided, the viscose being extruded through a multiple-orifice spinneret into a coagulating bath from which the tow thus formed is removed at considerably less than, e.g. approximately one-fifth of, the linear extrusion speed, washed and dried. Before washing, the tow may be treated with hot water to complete the regeneration. Before drying, the tow is desulphurized and bleached and, before or after drying, it may be coated with a binder by being immersed in an aqueous solution of a cellulose ether, e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl-cellulose or carboxymethylcellulose, being subsequently passed through a shaping device to form a round bundle of filaments and subjected to a vacuum treatment to remove excess solution, and being finally dried in a channel-like drier to retain its circular formation. Adsorption agents such as activated silica gel or activated alumina may be incorporated, e.g. by adding them to the binder solution. Quantitative process examples are given.ALSO:A cigarette filter comprises a piece of tow of substantially parallel regenerated cellulose filaments having a rough irregular surface and cavities due as described to the use in filament formation of a viscose in which air or other gas is finely divided, the viscose being extruded through a multiple-orifice spinneret into a coagulating bath from which the tow thus formed is removed at considerably less than, e.g. approximately one-fifth of, the linear extrusion speed, washed and dried.
