749,338. Couplings for conveying supersonic energy. REALISATIONS ULTRASONIQUES. March 26, 1954 [March 27, 1953], No. 8909/54. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XL (b)] In a probe for the ultrasonic testing of materials, the portion in contact with the material under test comprises a solid of revolution mounted' so as to be capable of rolling across the surface of the material. A disc of pressure-sensitive ceramic 9, Fig. 1, has axles 8 on either side, which are metallized intogrally with the disc electrodes 10, and are accommodated in bearings 5 which incorporate a mercury filled groove 6, 7 to make a connection between the electrodes 10 and conductors 2, 3. In a modification, Fig. 2, a similarly mounted conductive disc 14 serves as a coupling between the test-piece 15, and a crystal 16, housed in an oil-filled chamber 19. A still further embodiment using a coupling sphere is described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown). A crystal 27 in a final embodiment, Fig. 3, is mounted in an oil-filled hollow cylindrical container 23 which is mounted in bearings 22, 24. The oil and the container provide a path for the ultra-sonic waves.
