Abstract

796,150. Ultrasonic inspection devices. KRAUTKRAMER, J., and KRAUTKRAMER, H. Oct. 27, 1954, No. 31038/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 118 (2). [Also in Group XXXIX] When testing for flaws with ultrasonic waves, an absorbent coupling is used to reduce the intensity of a reflected wave received by the transducer from the interface between the coupling and the test-piece to “ or less of the intensity of the wave initially transmitted by the transducer. The coupling may comprise a layer of red or synthetic rubber immersed in water. In another arrangement, the coupling comprises two layers of synthetic rubber separated by a thin layer of coupling liquid. When the outside layer is worn, the other layer protects the head until the first is replaced. The outer layer may be an endless belt which rolls upon the material under test as the head is advanced over it, running water being used as a contact medium. An electrode may be formed either on the transducer crystal itself or on the synthetic rubber layer next to the crystal. It may be formed as a .conductive liquid or as a metal foil in liquid between the synthetic rubber and the crystal.
