Abstract
845,797. Ultrasonic wave couplings; probes. KELVIN & HUGHES Ltd. March 25, 1959 [March 31, 1958], No. 10306/58. Class 40 (4). [Also in Groups XXXV, XL (b) and XL (c)] In ultrasonic flaw detection apparatus pulses are transmitted and received by a probe comprising transducer assemblies 14a, 14b, immersed in a water-filled tank containing specimen 23 (" immersion testing ") and the echo arising at the water/specimen boundary is reduced by screen 18 (see Group XL (c)). Each transducer assembly consists of a barium titanate plate 10, Fig. 2, backed by an absorbing block 11 of tungsten powder bound with a synthetic resin and cemented to a quarter-wavelength plate 12 of a material having a specific acoustic impedance equal to the square root of the product of specific acoustic impedances of barium titanate and water, e.g. tungsten powder compacted with a binding agent. The assembly is sealed in water-tight container 14a by cement 47. For non-immersion testing a probe may be mounted on a carriage and coupled to the specimen through an oil film, Fig. 6 (not shown). In a further embodiment the transducers are inclined and transverse wave reflection is used for testing welds, Fig. 7 (not shown). In a further arrangement for flaw detection using transverse waves transducers 44, 45, Fig. 10, are mounted on a cylindrical support 52 rotatable about its axis.
