Abstract
1425249 Ultrasonic inspection devices; ultrasonic probes BRITISH STEEL CORP 18 June 1974 [19 June 1973] 29052/73 Headings H4D and H4J An ultrasonic probe for testing a tubular article comprises a transmitting transducer supported on a pad. The pad has a sound absorbent insert in that surface nearest the test article, for absorbing any surface waves generated on the article, and the probe construction is such as to restrict the beam width so as to limit the range of wave incidence angles at the article and hence inhibit surface wave generation. In the Fig. 1 embodiment, probes 1 and 2 are equidistant from a tube weld 3 to be inspected for flaws and are initially positioned by comparing probe signals from calibration notches machined in a reference tube. Each probe comprises a piezoelectric element 11 embedded in epoxy resin having a clear zone 13, for ultrasonic wave propagation, and a chalk-loaded absorption zone 14 to restrict the beam width and direction. Residual surface waves are damped by a nylon insert 9 in contoured pad 7. Inlet and outlet passages 15, 16 for water couplant are provided. The probes transmit alternately, and each receives signals resulting from pulses transmitted by itself or by the other probe.. The signal received by the non-transmitting probe is used to monitor the coupling efficiency.
