Abstract
732,083. Ultrasonic wave couplings. MURPHY RADIO, Ltd. April 30, 1954 [April 30, 1953], No. 12019/53. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A piezo-electric transducer integrally combined with a coupling for enabling the ultrasonic vibrations generated by the transducer to be transmitted into a test-piece comprises a block 1 of hard material converging at one part to a contact surface 2 of small area, and having a surface 3 of larger area which is substantially concentric or coaxial with the contact surface, a crystal layer 4 being provided in close contact with the surface 3; the block 1 also presenting pressure surfaces 5 to which pressure may be applied, other than through the crystal layer 4, to force the contact area 2 into good contact with the testpiece. The contact area 2 may provide either point or line contact with a test-piece, and may have a rounded tip to allow of angular movement of the block with respect to the surface of the test-piece.
