Abstract
715,143. Ultrasonic inspection devices. KELVIN & HUGHES, Ltd. March 13, 1953 [Dec. 13, 1951], No. 29271/51. Class 118 (2). In an ultrasonic pulse-echo flaw detector with separate transmitting and receiving piezoelectric crystals 10 and 11 coupled respectively to a shock-exciting triggered thyratron 14 and a receiver 18, the crystal 10 is cemented on top of crystal 11 with an intermediate earthed metal screen 12 so that the transmitted pulse on passing through the receiving crystal 11 generates therein only a comparatively weak " direct " pulse which may be balanced out by coupling the thyratron to a similar pair of crystals 20, 21 coupled to an artificial plastic load 22, the crystals 11 and 21 being coupled to the receiver 18 in anti-phase. Alternatively the relative positions of crystals 10 and 11 may be interchanged and crystal 20 may be excited by a separate thyratron.
