Abstract

683,592. Supersonic inspection devices. SPERRY PRODUCTS, Inc. June 8, 1951 [Dec. 1, 1950], No. 13626/51. Class 118 (ii). Relates to a C.W. reflection type supersonic flaw detector utilizing the Doppler effect and adapted for treating long lengths of material, e.g. railway lines. As shown a transmitting piezo electric crystal 15 is mounted on one surface 16 of a supporting block 17 which is adapted to slide over the surface 20 of the material 10, the angle 0 between the surfaces 16 and 20 and the acoustic density of the block 17 being such that the direction of propagation 21 of the waves induced in the material is inclined at a small angle to the surface 20. The receiving crystal 25 is similarly mounted on a block 27 connected to block 17 by a bar 29 so that when the assembly is slid over the surface 20 in the direction A the frequency of any received waves reflected by a defect D will differ from the transmitted waves due to the Doppler effect and means are provided, Fig. 2 (not shown), for heterodyning the transmitter input and receiver output to produce a beat frequency indicature of the defect. Alternatively the transmitting assembly may be stationary and the receiving assembly only moved.
