Abstract
1,227,064. Acoustic measurement of temperature. CENTRE NATIONAL DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES. 4 Sept., 1969 [6 Sept., 1968], No. 43818/69. Heading H4D. In a system for determining the temperature of a material (e.g. a steel bloom at more than 1000‹ C.) both longitudinal and transverse ultrasonic waves are transmitted into the material and their propagation times over substantially identical paths in the material are measured, the ratio of these times (and hence wave velocities) being a predetermined function of temperature. The propagation may involve reflection from a back surface of the material, or direct transmission through the material. At least one pair of adjacent transducers (one transducer for each wave type) is used, being coupled to the material via an air- or watercooled member forced against the material. This member may have a threaded surface to reduce parasitic reflections from its walls. The two wave types preferably have the same carrier frequency.
