Abstract

749,299. Tunnel kilns. SCHMIDT, E. G. April 6, 1954, No. 10058/54. Class 51(2). A tunnel kiln for exfoliating slate or roasting ores &c., has a preheating section 1 in which the roof rises gradually to a firing section 2 heated by gases entering by a side port 6 from a laterally disposed combustion chamber, a cooling section 3 of considerably decreased but uniform cross-sectional area supplied with jets of air from a pipe 8 outside the exit end of the tunnel, and a chimney 7 near the tunnel entrance. Trucks 15, having a platform of refractory concrete, are pushed through the furnace, outside of which is provided a parallel return track connected to the tunnel track at each end by transfer tracks. The return track may be replaced by another kiln.
