Abstract

749,230. Fluid flow meters; level indicators. ROGOFF, M. Aug. 6, 1954 [Aug. 13, 1953], No. 22968/54. Class 40(1) [Also in Group XVIII] The voltage drop across a thermistor exposed to the cooling effect of a fluid is used to indicate the presence of the fluid, as in a level indicator, or its rate of flow, the thermistor being supplied through a swamping resistor to keep the current nearly constant. By this means errors due to changes in temperature of the fluid are minimized. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, in which the thermistor 14<SP>1</SP> is supplied via a swamping resistor 18<SP>1</SP>, the voltage-responsive device is a relay 30 which is connected across the thermistor and a further series resistor 38. When the relay operates, it shunts out a normally energized relay 40 which then shunts resistor 38. This is to reduce the tendency of the main relay to chatter. In . the application to measuring fluid flow in a pipe, one thermistor 66 is subjected to the flow and another 68 is in a side branch of the pipe so as to be affected by the temperature of the fluid but not by its flow. The high resitahce of arms 70, 72 keeps the thermistor current approximately constant. Rate of flow is shown on a voltmeter 76.
