Abstract
748,976. Construction and cooling of cylinders. AKTIESELSKABET BURMEISTER & WAIN'S MASKIN-OG SKIBSBYGGERI. Nov. 11, 1953 [Nov. 12, 1952], No. 31255/53. Class 7(2) In a two-stroke engine having piston-controlled exhaust ports 3 leading to an exhaust belt 6 connected to an outlet pipe 9, a separate guide ring 4 is mounted around the cylinder inside the exhaust belt and provided with ports 5 forming extensions of the cylinder ports 3, said extensions being so directed as to deflect the flow of exhaust gases towards the outlet pipe, 9. The cross-section of the ports 5 preferably decreases towards their outer ends and their height may increase towards the outer ends thereof whilst the width simultaneously decreases. The total cross-sectional area of the ports 5 is preferably approximately equal to the cross-section of the outlet pipe 9 which may supply the exhaust gases to an exhaust turbine. Plate-shaped, rod-shaped, or aerofoil-shaped insertions 10, 11, 12, may be placed in the ports 5. The exhaust belt 6 is surrounded by a cooling water jacket 7 and the guide ring 4 may be provided with detachable vanes forming the side walls of the ports 5. In Fig. 3 the cylinder exhaust ports are divided into two ports 3a, 3b, the ports in the ring 4 being similarly divided into upper and lower ports 5a, 5b.
