Class 40(1) In an arrangement for selecting (a) the highest voltage from a group of direct voltages representing e.g. physical quantities (b) the lowest voltage from a second group of direct voltages and' (c) from the pair of voltages so derived selecting the larger or the smaller as required, the first group of voltages are connected at 8, 9, 10 ... &c. between a neutral conductor 1 and a negative conductor 6, and the second grcup are connected at 11, 12 ... &c. between the neutral conductor 1 and a positive conductor 4. Each source 8-12 is series connected with a static rectifier, 13-17 and the conductors 4, 6 are connected via resistors 5, 7 to respective batteries 2, 3. With a rectifier 18 disconnected, a current 17 flows from battery 3 through that one of the first group of voltage sources 8, 9, 10 &c. having the highest voltage, and the resistor 7. the selected voltage appearing at terminals 19-20. Similarly, a current 15 flows from battery 2 only through that one of the second group 11, 12 ... of voltages having the lowest voltage, and resistor 5, the lowest voltage thus selected from the second group appearing at terminals 20, 21. With the rectifier 18 connected as shown, it conducts if the selected one of voltages 11. 12 ... is greater than the selected one of voltages 8, 9, 10 ... and, provided that I 5 is greater than I 7 , blocks the sources 8, 9, 10 ... so that both conductors 4, 6, and therefore terminals 19, 21 assume the potential of the selected one of sources 11, 12 .... If the selected voltage of group 11, 12 ... is less than that selected from group 8, 9, 10 ... rectifier 18 is blocked and the two selected group voltages appear at the respective terminals 19. 21. The larger of the two selected voltages thus always appears at terminal 19. If, however, I, is made less than I, by suitable values of the resistors 5, 7 the smaller of the two selected group voltages appears at terminal 21. More complex selections may be effected by combining several devices such as that shown.
