Abstract
883,528. Transformers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 11, 1958 [April 12, 1957], No. 12069/57. Class 38 (2). [Also in Group XXXVII]. In an on-load tap changing system for a transformer two. paths are provided between each tapping and the load, one path including a resistance R, a portion of which is inserted successively between tappings and in series with the load during tap changing, thus limiting inter-tap currents and providing additional steps. Each tapping point T1 ... T3 has two off-load contactors S1 S6 and may be connected to the load terminal L2 by an-load contactors X, Y. If, for example, tapping T1 is in use S2 and Y only are closed. To change to T2, first S3 is closed, then X, thus inserting a portion of R between T1 and T2. Then Y is opened, followed by S2 so that T2 then supplies the load via the portion of R, and the output voltage increases. Finally S4, then Y are closed, and X and S3 opened, so that the output voltage further increases to that of T2. The transformer and resistance tappings may be chosen so that each increment of added voltage is greater than the preceding one. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates an arrangement wherein two D.C. traction motors, or groups of motors, are supplied through a bridge rectifier from a centre-tapped transformer, the centre tap being connected to a neutral point of the motor circuit and each half of the transformer having the tap-changing system described. Specification 770,614 is referred to.
