Abstract
748,682. Pipe-joints; repairing pipes. BOWLES, A. H. Oct. 29, 1954 [March 24, 1954], No. 8641/54. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). In means for effecting a connection between a first pipe 10 and a socket 11 on the end of a second pipe comprising a connecting piece 13 having a socket 14, connected to a spigot by an intermediate portion which presents an internal shoulder 15 at the base of the socket 14 the latter being engaged over the first pipe 10, and the spigot being located in the socket 11, the socket 14 has a depth greater than that of the socket 11 whilst a sleeve 12 is inserted into the socket 14 to facilitate caulking the joint; the invention also relates to a method of making such a connection. The shoulder 15 of the cast-iron connecting piece 13 is conical whilst the brass sleeve 12 has a flange 16 that is passed over the pipe 10, which pipe is then moved out of alignment with the socket 11 to allow the socket 14 to be passed thereover ; the pipe 10 is realigned with the socket 11 to permit the lower end of the piece 13 to enter the latter. The sleeve 12 is next lowered so that the flange 16 is supported by the seating 15 whereupon the two joints are caulked by yarn 17 and lead 18. The piece 13 may be used to replace a defective portion of an existing pipe system.
