A metal I-sectioned bar for supporting mine roofs has an upper flange 2 wider than a lower flange 5, and separate abutment members 4 are secured to the upper surfaces of the lower flange 4, for instance by welding, for cooperation with projections on the head of a pit prop for retaining the bar in correct position with respect to the prop. Strengthening ribs 3 are provided on both sides of the web 1, extending obliquely from the upper flange 2 to the lower flange 5.
