Abstract
747,641. Percussive tools. WACKER, H., and WACKER, P. Oct. 13, 1953 [Nov. 6, 1952], No. 28133/53. Class 124 A percussive tool in which the tool bit is reciprocated longitudinally is provided with an internal combustion engine detachably secured to the upper part of the tool housing and power is transmitted to the tool by a gear chain. As shown, applied to a tamping tool, the tool 1 is fixed to an internal combustion engine 4 by a flanged joint and the motor spindle 15 has a pinion 16 meshing with a gear wheel 17 on which is fixed a crank-pin 4. A connecting rod 18 connects the crank-pin 14 with a sleeve 19 slidably located within the housing 1. A piston 20 within the sleeve 19 is attached to the shank 2 of the bit and is actuated by two springs 21, 22, one on either side of the piston, as the sleeve 19 is reciprocated. The housing may have a handle 3 and a further handle 11 carrying the motor controls and may be attached to the housing. Another handle may be provided on the engine in addition to, or in lieu of, the handle 11. The engine exhaust may be used for clearing the bit or for heating the tool. The engine may be started by pressing the tool downwards on to the work.
