Abstract

781,511. Surgical drills. HAINAULT, M. Feb. 28, 1955 [March 2, 1954], No. 5878/55. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XXII] A power-driven surgical drill comprises a rod rotated by driving means, a lower member aligned and coaxially rotatable with the rod and slidable towards and away from the rod, co-operating clutch means on adjacent ends of the rod and the lower member, a compression spring urging the rod and the lower member apart, a central rotary bit secured to the lower member, a second tubular bit surrounding the rotary bit, fixed relative to the rod and keyed to the lower member to allow axial displacement of the lower member and the rotary bit within the tubular bit, the working end of the rotary bit projecting, when the clutch means is disengaged beyond the working end of the tubular bit. A rod 10 within the device is rotated by a drive 1 perpendicular to it and which engages a driven pinion 2 keyed to the rod 10. A sleeve 3 secured to the rod 10 is spaced by a spring 5 from a lower member 4 carrying a boring tool 6. Concentric with the member 4, a tubular rotary bit 7 is secured to the member 4 by a pin 8 slidably engaging a straight or helical slot. When the device is applied to the work, pressure on a pushmember 9 causes clutch teeth 11 on the sleeve member 3 to engage corresponding teeth 12 on the member 4 so that rotation is transmitted to the tools 6, 7. When the boring is completed, lack of resistance at the boring tool 6 allows the spring 5 to separate the clutch teeth 11, 12 and rotation of the tools 6, 7 ceases.
