Abstract
747,334. Retractable aircraft tanding gear. BLACKBURN & GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and THIRSK, W. H. Sept. 15, 1954, No. 26813/54. Class 4. A retractable steerable aircraft landing wheel leg 1 is rotatably mounted in a member 5 pivoted on a horizontal axis at 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, which leg 1 is at its end pivotally connected on an axis coincident with the said horizontal axis to a shaft 7 carrying a radial arm 9 to which steering movements are imparted by a jack 10 or the like, the retraction gear being operative on the member 1: As illustrated, the wheel 3 is mounted on a fork 2 freely pivoted to the member 1, a shock absorber 4 being operative between member 1 and fork 2. The retraction gear comprises toggle links 11, 12 pivoted to one another and to the aircraft and member 5 respectively at 11<SP>1</SP> and 13. A jack 14 operates between a pivot on the aircraft and a lost motion slot 15 in the link 11. The links 11, 12 preferably pass over the dead centre position when the leg is extended, and are acted upon by.a compression spring 16. A positive lock may also be provided. When the leg is retracted, the aperture in the aircraft skin is faired by doors 17, 18.
