Abstract

A hypochlorite-treated light hydrocarbon oil having an end boiling point not exceeding 350 DEG C. contains a small proportion of a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monocarboxylic acid having at least twelve carbon atoms in the molecule and a solubility in water which does not exceed 0.1 gram per litre at 20 DEG C. The monocarboxylic acid may be unsaturated and may be substituted with hydroxyl, mercapto, nitro or keto groups. Examples of suitable acids are oleic acid, linseed oil fatty acids, castor oil fatty acids, lauric acid and stearic acid. The acid may be used in a quantity between 0.001 and 0.1 per cent by weight based on the hydrocarbon oil. The hydrocarbon oil, which may be gasoline or kerosine, may be treated with a solution containing sodium or calcium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide (details of hydrochlorite treatment are given). The hydrocarbon oil may also be washed with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide, treated with sulphuric acid and/or liquid sulphur dioxide and/or an adsorbent such as clay or bauxite. The composition may also contain alkyl phenols, aromatic amines, dicarboxylic acids with at least eight carbon atoms, gum inhibitors, tetra alkyl lead, iron carbony, dicyclopentadienyl iron ethylene dichloride, ethylene dibromide, tricresyl phosphate, and dyes.
